CLEANSING THE LIVER - Teachings by Yogi Bhajan

Normally, every three months you should devote at least one week to cleansing your liver.  It is like changing your oil filter.  The only way to do this is through diet.  The following methods are effective:

 

(1)  Eat beets and beet greens, beets and carrots, or beets, carrots and onions.

Beet Carrot Casserole Recipe

This dish is cleansing to the liver and digestive tract.  To help your body do its own inner cleaning, east as a mono diet for one week in the spring or fall.

2 bunches scallions, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

ghee or vegetable oil

1 bunch beets

1 lb. carrots

tamari sauce (any gluten free soy sauce, or coconut aminos can be substituted) 

ground black pepper

Scrub beets and carrots.  Steam beets whole (don't cut off the roots or stems.)  After about 15-20 minutes, add carrots.  Steam until tender but firm.  Then remove outer peels from beets and carrots. (These should easily slip off.)  Grate using a coarse grater.  Keep beets and carrots separate to preserve their distinct colors.  Saute scallions and garlic in oil or ghee until tender.  Toss with beets and carrots and black pepper.  Place in casserole dish.  Sprinkle with tamari.  Broil for about 10 minutes.  Serves 4-6 people.

(2)  Drink beet and carrot juice.

Start with 14 ounces of carrot juice to 2 ounces of beet juice.  Slowly increase the proportion of beet to carrot juice up to 50/50, but no higher!  Straight beet juice has much too harsh an effect on the liver.

(3)  Drink daikon and carrot juice, in the ratio of 1 to 3.  

Or go on a diet of carrot juice and steamed daikons with ghee and black pepper.
